Biography
Born in Tokyo, Maiko Chiba received her Bachelor's degree in composition from the Tokyo University of the Arts. She received her doctoral degree in composition from the University of Maryland's School of Music. She has studied composition with Robert Gibson, Thomas DeLio, Jeffrey Mumford, Jo Kondo, Akira Kitamura and Sakurako Ohta.
She composes for a wide range of needs - from a single instrument up to a full orchestra, with genres ranging from classical to modern age. Her compositions have been performed both in the USA and Japan, including Strathmore mansion, Ring auditorium at Hirshhorn museum and the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage by artists such as James Stern (violinist), Audrey Andrist (pianist), Opus 3 trio, 21st Century Consort and the Japanese Choral Society of Washington. One of her compositions "~ On a Field of Wintry Glass ~ for violin, cello, and piano" commissioned and performed by Opus 3 Trio was highly praised by the Washington Post in 2000 (see below).
Ms. Chiba's field of composition also extends to film and commercial music; her numerous compositions for TV documentary programs for NHK (Japanese National Broadcasting company) have been broadcast in both the USA and Japan. One of her series of musical compositions received the HDTV Program Award by NHK in 2001.
Her awards include: a first prize from the Walsum competition from the University of Maryland's School of Music, a Special Commendation from the Vienna Modern Masters Orchestral Recording Award (Austria), a third prize from the Suita music competition (Osaka, Japan), the Ataka award from the Tokyo University of the Arts (Japan) and the Washington Award by the S&R foundation (USA). She is also a regional winner of the SCI/ASCAP Student Competition in 2000 and 2003.
In the fall of 2010, her first original CD "Maiko Chiba: Chamber Music" was released.
Maiko Chiba is currently a member of the American Composer's Forum, BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.), and the Music Teachers National Association.
